Houseki no Kuni 67 Review : "Speculations on Cairngorm in the Next Chapter"

The latest chapter of Houseki no Kuni manga left me with a major speculation about our beloved partner of Phos, Cairngorm. Now we know that there is a major cause of Cairngorm's loyalty towards Phos that is really loyal but sometimes feel reluctant to do so. Let's throw some recap first before going into speculations.

The latest chapter showed us that Cairngorm is actually feels a bit reluctant about doing his predecessor's will, Ghost's will. Ghost, who was the outer layer of Cairngorm, chipped off by the moon people and got taken away. If we remembered correctly, before the depart of Ghost, Ghost told Cairngorm (his inner self) to protect Phos and keep Phos save.

While I always assume that her loyalty towards Phos was a genuine one, it is actually caused by Cairngorm's being haunted by this will and his actual self really wants to be free from the grasp of his predecessor. This true intention of his were known by Archmea himself from the first time Cairngorm asked Archmea to attach syntenthic Antarc onto himself just for Phos to be more stable.

The actual reason why Cairngorm is still being haunted by Ghost is Cairngorm still have a remnant of Ghost inside his eye. This remnant is the one who told Cairngorm to hold the will to protect Phos and Cairngorm has been obeying this will out of his consciousness without any acceptance from Cairngorm's actual self. This conflict and doubt in himself caused Cairngorm to be broken by his will to be free and Ghost's will to protect Phos as his physical body were scattered apart in the process.

In the end, Archmea agreed to grant Cairngorm's wish. This was rather vague since he never told us which wish he wanted to grant : attach synthetic Antarc or freedom from his own past self. I am very sure that Archmea will grant Cairngorm's wish to be free and now come the speculation on how Archmea will grant his wish?

My speculation of how to make this wish come true is to remove Ghost from Cairngorm by replacing his eyes with another gem that has been taken away. The rule to choose the eyes is simple. One, they are coming from any gem that has been taken by Moon People partially or wholly. Two, they are not coming from Ghost. And by that, I actually have three names those are perfect to be candidates of Cairngorm's eyes.

1. Antarcticite
Antarcticite was taken away by the moon while trying to protect Phos in one winter. At that time, Phos, who was unable to move because he could not control the alloy, must watched Antarc's being taken away by the Moon People and when he ultimately could control his new arms in last seconds, he was too late. This tragedy left Phos into a major breakdown that his happy-go-lucky personality was gone.

In this breakdown state, it was Cairngorm who was able to bring back the old Phos and made Phos' happy-go-lucky personality back.

If Archmea is really going to grant both wish of Cairngorm's, he would choose Antarc's eyes for Cairngorm's eyes replacement. The inclusions from Antarc's eyes would lead Cairngorm to be guided by Antarc's perspective to his new resolve about protecting Phos. Since Antarc was Phos' mentor, he would give him insights about Phos (similar like Lapis did in Phos) and how Phos had made his last days less and less lonely. From this, I speculate that Cairngorm's resolve to protect Phos will be based by how Cairngorm is actually don't want to be lonely as he was with Ghost before.

2. Phosphophyllite
While fighting with another Moon People, Phos' head carelessly got chipped off from the body and taken away thus his eyes now are in the possession of Moon People. This very moment marked the loyalty of Cairngorm (which now we can assume, actually based from the will of Cairngorm's past self remnant) as he offered Lapis' head to replace Phos' head and even offered his own head thoughtlessly.

In the time while Phos' wass not wake up yet, Cairngorm took up the Winter duty, the duty that was entrusted to Phos before her head was taken away and he sometimes visited Phos just to talk to his unconscious body.

If Archmea is going to attach Phos' eyes onto Cairngorm, the inclusions of both will act differently then what I have been stated on Antarc's case. Cairngorm will experience and see Phos in the past as well Phos' struggle to become a better gem while experiencing tragedies like having to lost both of her legs, her arms, and two of his partners in one same year, something that Cairngorm has not seen yet because she was inside Ghost all along. Of course, if Archmea really will do this, Cairngorm will now know the secrets of Cinnabar and why Phos really wants to find a better job for him. From this, Cairngorm's resolve to protect Phos will come form Phos' inspiration and will oddly gain a new drive to find a better duty for Cinnabar, together with Phos.

3. Lapis Lazuli
The replacement of Phos' head with Lapis made Lapis' eye taken in a rather unique way. Rather than being taken forcefully, Lapis' eyes was taken away by Moon People in exchange of synthetic pearl eye and Moon People's trust to bring as many gem as Phos can in order to betray Adamant.

Lapis was Ghost (and Cairngorm)'s previous partner before his body got taken away by Moon People, leaving his head without any body. Ghost kept Lapis' head in a wish that someday the parts of Lapis will be sent back to the land.

If Archmea is going to attach Lapis' eyes, the inclusions will occur closely like Antarc's case. similar like what Lapis do to Phos. Lapis, as the previous partner of Cairgorm, will definitely scold Cairngorm for his carelessness. Lapis will told Cairngorm to trust on her decision and he would like to make Cairngorm to see Phos with his new eyes. With that, Cairngorm will extend the trust to the current owner of Lapis' head, Phos. From this, Cairngorm's resolve to protect Phos will be based by trust built by him and his previous partner, Lapis.

From those three speculations, I would pick Antarc's eyes as the one that I really want to see but Lapis's eyes as the most likely to happen. I would bet, Archmea will try his best to fulfill Cairngorm's wish while still making Cairngorm's loyalty there (or making Cairngorm to have another resolution to protect Phos in the will of his own) because Cairngorm may be the last person who keeps Phos on the ground. Archmea is smart enough to not let Phos fall apart because he will gain more if he could take Phos on his side rather than no one.

That's all from my review and speculations about Houseki no Kuni Chapter 67. Let's see how Chapter 68 will blow us later in the next month.

Till we meet again!
